Aaron Ramsdale has sent Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta a clear message about the club captaincy as the Gunners boss weighs up who should wear the armband next season.
The north London club’s main leadership role appears up for grabs with current captain Alexandre Lacazette looking likely to depart in the summer when his contract expires. And Ramsdale has shown Arteta just how eager he would be to be considered for the job should it become available.
It comes as Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has complained about Lacazette’s penalty in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over his side earlier this month. And Arsenal are set for a £2.5milion transfer budget boost with Stuttgart looking to make Konstantinos Mavropanos ‘ stay at the club permanent.

Transfer budget boost
Arsenal could be handed a useful transfer budget boost with Konstantinos Mavropanos set to secure a permanent move to Stuttgart.
The Greek centre-back has spent the season out on loan at the Bundesliga side, who appear to have been impressed enough with his performances that they now intend to take up an option-to-buy clause that was inserted into the agreement. That means the Gunners’ coffers could be boosted by £2.5million ahead of what could be another busy summer transfer window for Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu.

Lacazette complaint made
Leicester City captain Kasper Schmeichel has raised concerns over Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty against his side earlier this month.
The Denmark goalie was left furious after Lacazette slotted away the penalty as he was convinced the Frenchman had come to a stop during his stuttering run-up – something which is not permitted in the laws of the game. He remonstrated with referee Anthony Taylor but he and the VAR were satisfied no laws were broken.
And Schmeichel has now raised his issues with refereeing body PGMOL during a recent captains’ call.

Ramsdale makes captaincy claim
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has said he would “take the responsibility” of wearing the captain’s armband should it become available.
The 23-year-old only arrived at the Emirates club last summer but has already made quite the impression after forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI. Following the departure of ex-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January and with Alexandre Lacazette looking increasingly likely to leave when his contract expires, a new Arsenal skipper could be named this summer.
And it’s absolutely clear that Ramsdale wants to be considered for the role, saying he would “excel” if handed the armband.
